In a democracy, citizens have a right to expect their politicians to listen to them and to implement appropriate policies.

This requires real communication which is not about posturing or grandstanding. This site has arisen out of the debate over the proposed garbage incinerator in Courtice - although that was far from the first environmental issue to generate heat from the citizens of Durham Region.

Throughout the incinerator debate there was a growing body of dissent that complained bitterly that their 'representatives' were not listening.

We want the Councils that we elect next year to be different - we want Councils which will respect the environment for its paramount importance. We want Councils which will not make decisions based on short term expedience.

In the lead up to the June 24th vote on the EA, a broad environmental questionnaire was sent to all Councillors in Durham (both local and regional). So far eleven councillors have answered our questions and at least as many more have 'kicked the tires'. Citizens have a right to expect that all of their representatives will answer their questions and engage in debate on the issues

The answers from that questionnaire are posted on this site for all to see and to comment. We hope this leads to genuine dialogue.

The site is part of a broader organization which continues the fight against the incinerator.

The site is administered by a loose "Durham Election 2010" committee:

  • Doug Anderson, Chief Spokesperson and Webmaster
  • Louis Bertrand
  • Ashley Bridgeman
  • Rebecca Harrison
  • Bert Kortekaas
  • Dave Renaud
  • Peter Rodrigues
  • Bev Tindal
  • Chris White
  • Stan Williams

We are looking for additional members with a view to having local committeess in each municipality who can monitor their local councils, candidates and media.
